A personal overture to creativity, connection…and blogging

Starting a blog wasn’t on my New Year’s resolutions list for 2025, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about starting for a while. One of my “quests” for this year (an alternative to “resolutions” that I’m trying out) is to tackle things that I’ve been putting off—or things that scare me. So, here we are!

I’m drawn to the clarity and focus that blogging allows. While it’s hard to remember a time before social media, blogging takes me back to the earlier days of the web, when content and ideas could be shared freely without the distraction of ads or the influence of algorithms.

I’m also drawn to blogging as a way to connect and learn. As a musician—specifically, a music director—I find it really valuable to learn from others working in the performing arts. In a rapidly changing world, especially with all the buzz around AI, spaces where real people can connect about real experiences feel more important than ever.

What exactly will this blog be about?

Honestly, it will be a work in progress as I figure out what inspires me to write, and what readers are interested in. My vision is to share notes from the trenches of working in the performing arts, along with ideas, resources and inspiring work I come across along the way. As an educator, I also want to offer content that helps artists grow their craft.

Right now, I’m considering a few main topic categories:

  • Audition Success – Practical tips, personal stories, and lessons learned from both sides of the audition table
  • Time Management for Creatives – Strategies for staying productive (and sane) in an increasingly distracted world
  • Ask the MD – Questions, advice, and behind-the-scenes insights from a MD (that’s “music director” for short, no stethoscope required)
  • Issues & Trends in the Performing Arts – Commentary on what’s evolving (or not) in the world of the performing arts

I would love for this platform to be a space for two-way conversation. What questions do you have about the performing arts, life as a music director, or anything in between? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to feature reader questions in future posts.

Welcome to this space. I’m excited to grow this community together!
